i don’t have the words.

I can’t quite find my words today. I have so many things to share (some lessons, some new experiences from earlier this week) but I just can’t seem to make the words gel.

So I’ve decided to do two other things today:

1. Look for a new chandelier for our dining room (I like this one. I think it would be a good conversation starter. Don’t you?).

2. Cozy sweater shopping on Queen West. It’s far enough from all the TIFF hub-bub and always a good place to find sales, while getting some fresh air. Ah, love the fall.  This sweater has caught my eye. Hope to find one just like it.

If this post doesn’t inspire you to shop, then I hope it gives you a lovely feeling of “hey, it’s OK”….to not find the words sometimes.  ….to not know what you’re feeling all the time. ….to just let yourself be inside your skin, walking in your body, with your thoughts close at hand.  There are days when the words will just find you.

reinventing: jean shorts.

I made these jean shorts over the weekend from a pair of my favorite jeans, that are no longer. A pesky (huge!) tear in the right thigh of these jeans forced me to the decision. The result: new jean shorts that, although I’d probably never wear in public, make for great around-the-house shorts, perfect for weekend cooking, cleaning and being lazy on the couch. All of these things we did this past weekend.

Here’s how to do it.

(click on the image to enlarge)

step one: CUT. Find the tear and in your jeans and starting cutting right through it, all the way around the leg of your jeans. Save the scrap leg.

step two: MEASURE. Take the scrap leg and measure it against the other side (even though these are “indoor shorts” doesn’t mean they have to look sloppy, right?)

step three: CUT. Again. But just an inch or so….

step four: TEAR & FRAY. From your small cut in the leg, pull at the tear until you get to the end. Cut away the rest with your scissors.

I like to fold up the frayed edges, leaving a few strings around the hem for style.

(PS, I used fabric sheers for this project, which worked really well, but I’m sure you could use a good pair of kitchen scissors, too.)

take me to singapore.

Fall is here. To celebrate the last weekend of the summer, we stayed in the city on Saturday. Had lunch at Waterfalls Indian Tapas Bar & Grill (Kensington Market). The service was slow (but friendly). I think the server was just overwhelmed. It rained hard that day and we sat by the huge, open windows and watched rain fall as we ate butter chicken and chana masala. Oh my. Slow service, but the food made up for it.

I ordered a Singapore Sling. That was the drink my mom ordered in every restaurant we went to during the 80s. I remember those times well and fondly.

Here’s a little post-long weekend pick me up, if you’re in the mood.

Singapore Sling
1/2 oz grenadine syrup
1 oz gin
sweet and sour mix
club soda
1/2 oz cherry brandy

flea markets and fresh honey, Honey.

Last weekend, we got away for a bit. This weekend, we’re doing the same, but to one of my favorite places on Earth: New York City.

But first, last weekend – if you live in Southern Ontario, I highly recommend the little gem of a flea market that’s in Elmvale, just outside Midland. From super local vegetables and fruit grown just a couple of miles from the site, to handmade vintage belts (just $20!), I was amazed by the prices and loot. And the peaches. Oh, the peaches!

We came home with some fruit, honey and some art for our bedroom, but forgot to grab the “Supertramp: Paris” record before we left. We had tucked it away behind a pile of records (as if someone was going to snatch it though, really) and just got so caught up with everything that we left it behind.

Wonder if it will be there next week. I’ll bet you 10 bucks it is.

PS, guess who turns 31 on Sunday……

PPS, thank you to my cute husband for the photos… you did good, Honey.

PPPS, Rob took me to an amazing lunch after the flea market…more pics, another post, coming up soon….

Best beaches in Ontario.

Ontario beaches have a lot to offer. But, even after living in this province all of my life, I have to admit I didn’t enjoy (I mean really enjoy) an Ontario beach until a couple of weeks ago. Now I’m hooked.

We were at a family member’s cottage on Georgian Bay and the water was clearer than the stuff that comes out of my kitchen faucet at home (although I’m sure it was much, much cleaner). In fact, I’d say the clarity rivals the ocean from our last trip to Cuba. It was that clear and fresh (but not salty, of course, since it’s a fresh water lake).

After a long week of deadlines and meetings, I need a bit of a refresh before the week ahead; Rob and I will be back at the family cottage this weekend and, you can bet your city shoes, I’ll be sprawled on a beach blanket, taking sporadic dips in that clear-as-day lake.

Here is a great list of Ontario’s best beaches, via one of my favorite magazines, Toronto Life.

We had so much fun at the beach last time that we forgot to take any photos! But this time will be different. I’m armed with a camera and won’t be afraid to use it.
