hey baby, what’s your sign?

1. This article is really great because it looks at something that a lot the women my age are considering right now – I’m no surgeon, but even a writer (heck, any woman) can worry about things like this.

2. I realized something today: almost every close friend I have uses some sort of method to assess people: astrology, star signs, numerology, MBTI results, the list goes on. I think they do this as a way to better understand people and why they do things, which I can relate to. Like, why does Rob always put my keys on top of the refrigerator, even though he knows I can’t see that high? It drives me nuts. I’d love to know why he does that. So, for fun, here’s a free link to the MBTI test. I like this method of assessing behavior because it packages the way we use perception and judgement in our daily lives, which, to be honest, I can relate to more than zodiac signs, but maybe that’s just my hang up.

3. If you live in Canada (like me) then you know how pricey international shipping can be. In fact, most awesome online stores that are based in the U.S. and Europe won’t even ship to Canada because it’s so expensive (I’m looking at you, Zappos). It’s shit, really, because malls stress me out and it’s been too cold to shop downtown, outdoors, lately, so..  Anyway. I bought this snazzy pair of sandals from Aldo.com last week – shipping was FREE and the package arrived in 24 HOURS. And, best part, if I hate the sandals (which I don’t, I love them), I can return them to a nearby Aldo store; no nasty re-shipping! Huh, I feel a weight lifted.

Might blog some more this weekend, not sure yet. Rob and I have tickets to the Leafs game tomorrow, which makes me happy, because there is nothing quite as Toronto as dinner and a hockey game with your main squeeze.

wanna meet…and talk about writing?

I’m speaking, in public, in less than a week. I’m talking about writing and publishing, at the place that started it all for me: York University.

Humbled, I got an email a few weeks ago from the university, asking if I’d join a panel of experts and talk about my experience as a writer since graduating in 2003.

(next year it’ll be 10 years since I graduated university..how that’s even possible, I don’t know).

If you’re in the GTA and interested in coming to this talk (I believe it’s free) email me and I can make the arrangements for you, my pleasure. Last I heard, the talk was nearly full, so have a think and let me know soon.

I wanted to extend this offer here, on the blog since, at least a couple of times a month, a reader or frustrated office worker emails me asking: how do I become a writer?

Well, come out on Tuesday, February 28, to York University and I’ll do my best to give you everything I know, plus everything I’m learning on the subject. Here are more details.

Humbled,

sandy.

edit: I just want to thank my dear friend, S, who emailed me to say that I wrote I would be speaking in “pubic” instead of “public” up top…it’s now fixed. Hey, if your friends can’t copyedit your mistakes, who can?

the coolest cake ever.

Can you believe it?

…and the best part?

MY AUNT MADE THIS!

She’s so incredibly talented. When I was a kid, she painted and sketched. Throughout my entire life, she’s always had a camera in one hand, the person in the family who manages to wrangle everyone with ease, so that she can take no less than five pictures to capture what she feels will be a moment we’ll want to remember some day. She’s always thinking of others like that. And I love her. And her amazing cake.

sandy.

ps: just got an email from a reader – yes, the entire thing is edible! isn’t that cool? the computer, briefcase, calculator, coffee mug, iphone & donut…takes “life is delicious” to a new level.

academy awards at the revue.

I’ve mentioned the Revue before, but I can’t help it. I love it. It was built around the same time my house was, just over 100 years go, and is one of the early markers of the neighborhood. A century later, it continues to have a certain distinction and hold a certain esteem with the people who know its story.

Anyway, if you’re into the Oscars and think watching it on the big screen would be up your alley, the Revue Cinema will be broadcasting it live on February 26 at 7 p.m.. Sounds like a good night waiting to happen if you ask me: popcorn smell, retro theater surroundings and movie geeks all in one room, in harmony.

So sweet.
